For his work on the science of persuasion, Dr. Robert Cialdini is a well-known American social psychologist and keynote speaker. Over three million copies of his book Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion, published in 1984, have been sold, and it has been translated into 37 languages. At Arizona State University, Cialdini is presently the Regents’ Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Marketing.
In 1945, Cialdini was born in New York. In 1967, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. Stanford University awarded him a PhD in social psychology in 1971.
After graduating from the University of California, Santa Cruz, Cialdini started teaching there. After that, he made the transfer to Arizona State University, where he has been working as a professor ever since. INSEAD, one of the world’s foremost business schools, has had Cialdini as a visiting professor and director of research in addition to his teaching responsibilities.
To better understand how people make decisions, Cialdini looked into the psychology of influence and coercion. In his book, Influence, he outlines six elements of persuasion. Reciprocation, commitment and consistency, social evidence, authority, like, and scarcity are all examples of persuasion.
If the person making the request has done something for us first, we are more inclined to comply with their request, which is based on the concept of reciprocity. As an example, we are more likely to purchase a product if we get a free sample from a salesman.
We are more inclined to comply with a request if we have already agreed to do so, according to the concept of commitment and consistency. Contracts are an example of an agreement that we are more likely to adhere to if we’ve signed.
We are more inclined to comply with a request if we observe other individuals doing the same thing, according to the social proof principle. The more we observe others queuing up for a new product, the more likely we are to want to purchase it.
A person is more likely to comply with a request if the one making the request is seen as an authoritative figure, according to the concept of authority. We are more inclined to comply with a doctor’s orders, for example, and take the prescription prescribed.
We are more inclined to comply with a request if we like the person making the request, according to the principle of like. As an example, we are more inclined to help out a buddy if they ask us.
If we feel an item is in short supply or in great demand, we are more inclined to comply with a request. We are more inclined to purchase a concert ticket if we are informed that there are just a few tickets available.
In the area of social psychology, Cialdini is revered for his work on persuasion, which he published in the book Influence. Cialdini has also studied social norms and how they affect human behavior in addition to persuasion. Yes! : 50 Scientifically Proven Ways to Persuade is one of several books he has published, including Pre-Suasion: A Revolutionary Way to Influence and Persuade.
Since his groundbreaking work in social psychology in the 1960s, Cialdini has been hailed as an icon in the profession. As a keynote speaker, he delivers presentations on psychology, human behavior, and leadership.
