In Montreal, Canada, Georgette (née Bukalam) and Terry O’Leary raised young O’Leary as their own. Georgette is a journalist and entrepreneur from a small town in Quebec. When Kevin was 18, his father died of a heart attack. As a consequence of his Irish mother’s religious background, he was obliged to attend Catholic school. As a result, he was forced to transfer to several different high schools, including St. Michael’s College School in Toronto, a catholic high school. Later in maturity, he remarked that high school was “the best years of my life.”

He attended the University of Waterloo in Ontario after graduating from high school. He began his studies in engineering, but subsequently changed his major to environmental studies. In 1977, he received a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies from the University of Waterloo.

Nabisco hired O’Leary as an associate brand manager after he graduated from university in Toronto. His next job was as a production assistant on CBC’s The Nature of Things. He worked there for a year.

SoftKey was founded in 1980 by O’Leary and two friends, Jim Treliving and George Melville, as a joint venture between the three.. The business specialized in the development of computer-based instructional resources. The Learning Firm, a major educational software company, was purchased by SoftKey for $4 billion in 2012.
