Speaker Bio

Nobody compares to Chief Petty Officer David Goggins. The Navy SEAL, a member of an elite group of military personnel who are often deployed on some of the world’s most difficult missions, needed more of a challenge for himself, so he set out to conquer the world’s most difficult sporting events. He is currently regarded as one of the top endurance athletes in the world.

In less than four years, David has competed more than 30 endurance races, including various ultra-marathons, triathlons, ultra-triathlons cycling races, and grueling mountain ascents, breaking new course records and consistently placing in the top five. In 2007, just before he was diagnosed with a hole in his heart, he finished 203.5 miles in the 48-Hour National Championship endurance foot race, breaking previous records by 20 miles and earning a berth among the top 20 ultra-marathoners in the world. His outstanding accomplishments earned him the title “Running Hero” in Runner’s World. The Navy even requested him to be their poster boy and participate in a recruitment advertisement.

The military record of David alone is astounding. He is the only member of the U.S. Armed Forces to have completed SEAL training (including two Hell Weeks), U.S. Army Ranger School (where he graduated as Honor Man), and Air Force tactical air controller training. He fought in Iraq and served as the bodyguard for Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari. Those are the only missions he can discuss freely. This modern-day G.I. Joe has participated in some of the most sensitive military deployments, including top-secret missions with the ability to affect international geopolitical and American foreign policy.

David does not care about any of his prizes, medals, plaudits, or magazine articles. Not for this reason does he act as he does. Other than the more than $2 million he has earned for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, he has no interest in this recognition. He is not attempting to be the best in the world. He does not care how many races he has run. He does not keep track of the distance he has traveled. There is no scoreboard or finish line.

Instead, he focuses on beyond his comfort zone and achieving his personal best. David chooses to compete in the most difficult events and endure some of the most rigorous military training programs in the country solely to see what he’s made of. For him, physical suffering is a path of identity, and endurance is a meditation that develops his faith and draws him closer to God. No other encounter leaves him feeling more clear, concentrated, and alive.

To comprehend what makes this inspiring guy tick, it is vital to grasp his origins. David, who was born in Buffalo in 1975 to an abusive family, began working at his father’s roller rink company as soon as he could crawl. From kindergarten to his senior year of high school, he was rarely in his class, and the latchkey kid endured every kind of cruelty, from his own father’s personal and societal abuse to the rampant racism of small-town Indiana, where he had been raised by a working single mother since middle school.

David, who barely graduated with a GPA of 1.6, was told he was too stupid, too sick, or too overweight to succeed in his chosen military career. In Brazil, Indiana, just miles from a major KKK stronghold, he was frequently threatened and called the “n-word.” He battled weight, severe allergies, sickle cell trait, and a congenital heart abnormality. But he never permitted these circumstances to hinder him or make him a victim. He decided to overcome and disprove his critics and detractors.

This is why David is still such a sought-after public speaker. His “no excuses; suck it up” philosophy has made him a favorite on the speaking circuit, and he is frequently invited to speak at college campuses and business conferences, as well as address elite sports teams such as the Seattle Seahawks. His viewers receive crash training in personal responsibility. David is all about taking responsibility for his mistakes. For him, the contemporary norms of coddling, entitlement, and blame are unacceptable. He is one of a rare and remarkable breed of men exactly because he is pure old school.
