Speaker Bio

David Burkus is a management professor and a podcaster who has received numerous awards. In 2015, Thinkers50, the world’s most prestigious ranking of management thinkers, selected him as one of the emerging thought leaders most likely to affect the business landscape in the coming years.

His most recent book, Under New Management, challenges the established and commonly accepted ideas of corporate management, demonstrating that they are out of date, archaic, or simply do not work – and revealing what does work in their place.

In addition, he is the author of The Myths of Creativity: The Truth About How Innovative Companies and People Generate Great Ideas, which was published in 2012.

Mr Burkus is a regular contributor to the Harvard Business Review and Inc magazine, among other publications. His work has appeared in publications such as Fast Company, the Financial Times, Bloomberg BusinessWeek, and CBS This Morning, among other publications.

David’s cutting-edge perspectives on leadership have garnered him invitations to address groups of executives from a wide range of enterprises. For Fortune 500 firms such as Microsoft, Google, and Stryker; in-demand conferences such as SXSW and TEDx events; and government and military officials at the United States Naval Academy and Naval Postgraduate School, he’s delivered keynote speeches and seminars to a diverse range of audiences. He’s also the host of the award-winning programme Radio Free Leader, which is available on iTunes.

David spends his time in the classroom when he is not speaking or writing. At Oral Roberts University, he holds the position of associate professor of management. There, he teaches courses on organisational behaviour as well as creativity and innovation.

He is a member of the advisory board of Fuse Corps, a non-profit organisation dedicated to bringing about radical and reproducible change in local government.

A how-to manual for anyone leading a remote team, not just virtual teams at startups, his book, Leading from Anywhere is available online. Providing a well-balanced combination of suggestions for developing and managing a remote team, this book is an excellent resource for anybody considering or currently managing remote teams.

In his book, Friend Of A Friend . . .Understanding the Hidden Networks That Can Transform Your Life and Your Career makes the case that to be successful in life and business, you must develop a strategy that leverages the hidden networks that already exist around you. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in life and business success. In his book, the author argues that you should not concentrate on growing your “personal network”—by introducing yourself to strangers at cocktail parties, stuffing business cards into the pockets of everyone you meet, or signing up for the latest online tool that promises to help you meet more people—but rather on developing “network intelligence” instead.

The book The Myths of Creativity debunks the myths that surround the mechanisms that inspire innovation. Based on the most recent research into the factors that contribute to the success of creative individuals and businesses, David Burkus identifies the myths that hold us back and demonstrates how anyone can embrace a practical approach that is grounded in reality when seeking out the most innovative ideas, projects, processes, and programmes. This book will assist anyone who is having difficulty with creativity or who is making excuses for delaying the job of the invention to overcome their obstacles to discovering new concepts.
