Bethany Hamilton is a world-class surfer and famous female athlete who has won the hearts and minds of millions of people after she was attacked by a shark but still continued to pursue her sport. As a female motivational speaker, she speaks at schools and business conferences where she shares her compelling story.
Bethany Hamilton was born on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, on February 8, 1990. She started surfing when she was eight years old. Tom and Cheri Hamilton, Bethany’s parents, taught her at home. Bethany learned to surf as a family and rapidly rose to the level of a skilled surfer.
While surfing off the shore of Kauai, Bethany was bitten by a 14-foot tiger shark in 2003, when she was only 13. An arachnid chewed off her left arm, and she lost 60% of her blood. Surgery was performed on Bethany at the hospital. Just a week after she was sent to the hospital, she was discharged and returned to her family.
A few weeks after the incident, Bethany was back in the water surfing. One-armed surfer, she immediately became a role model for others to follow in her footsteps. NSSA National Championships in the 14-and-under category were Bethany’s in 2004, and she won it.
Bethany Hamilton’s name has become a synonym for motivation and achievement. Her narrative of persistence, faith, and hope has echoed throughout the world, inspiring people all over the world.
Bethany loses her left arm to a 14-foot tiger shark when she was 13 years old, seemingly putting an end to her dream of becoming a professional surfer. Bethany, on the other hand, returned to surfing just one month after the attack and, within two years, had achieved her first national surfing championship. Bethany’s foundation of faith has served as her backbone, as well as a source of truth, hope, and strength in difficult times.
She achieved her aim of competing in professional surfing when she was 17 years old, and she continues to be a competitive surfer to this day. Bethany’s Christian message, charity initiatives, and overall character have had a significant impact on a huge number of individuals.
Her happiest moment is being a wife and mother, and she continues to touch and inspire individuals all over the world as a professional surfer, author, and motivational speaker, among other endeavors. She currently will have her blog as well as an online course dedicated to assisting others in becoming unstoppable.
Bethany came second at the NSSA National Championships in July, demonstrating her growing talent in the sport. Sadly, on October 31, she is attacked by a shark, which results in her left arm being traumatically amputated below the shoulder. Even though she has only one arm, Bethany returns to surfing only 26 days after losing her arm, earning her international media attention.
Bethany’s daring comeback to surfing earned her numerous awards, including the MTV Teen Choice Award for Courage and the ESPN ESPY Award for “Best Comeback Athlete.” She continues to compete in surfing. The publication of Bethany’s autobiography, Soul Surfer, quickly becomes a best-seller. She goes on to win the National Surfing Championships a year later!
In 2008, Bethany begins her first year of a full-time surfer on the Women’s Pro circuit, which takes her all over the world for competitions and training opportunities. Her third-place finish at the Roxy Pro in Australia is a personal best. Meetings with the Hollywood film producers for Soul Surfer, the film, are the first step in the process. Friends of Bethany is the name of her non-profit organization.
Ever since she learned to stand on a surfboard, Bethany has made surfing a part of her daily routine. She considers her love for surfing to be a blessing from God, and it is this that has motivated her to return to the sport despite all obstacles.
Returning to surfing after being attacked by a shark, Bethany found success in competition; today, she is making her mark as a prominent surfer in the free surfing arena (following waves, getting photos/videos published, and “Living The Search”). She presently competes in select World Surf League (WSL) tour events, which she is invited to, as well as in other special events throughout the year.
Bethany’s ability to inspire others reached new heights in 2016 when she defeated a six-time championship and the world’s top-ranked surfer in a major World Surf League competition. She has risen to become one of the most successful professional surfers in history by conquering some of the most difficult obstacles and continue pursuing her passion in the face of adversity. In 2017, she was elected into the Surfer’s Hall of Fame, which is a prestigious honor.
Since then, Bethany Hamilton’s name has been synonymous with motivation. Bethany is a sought-after great speaker with a devoted following. Soul Surfer is my favorite movie in the whole world. I can relate to it well actually, because my dad broke his neck and his left arm was paralyzed and rendered pretty much useless. He was a very, very serious bicyclist and is now trying to get back on the bike even with his paralyzed arm. It CAN be done, with the grace of God, as shown with my dad, and Bethany.
