Bernice King is an American minister, lawyer, and social justice leader. She is the youngest child of civil rights leaders Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King, and the CEO of The King Center. She is also a leading figure in the civil rights movement and a powerful voice for social justice.
King was born in 1963 in Atlanta, Georgia, and was raised in a family that was deeply committed to the civil rights movement. She was deeply impacted by the work of her father, and from a young age, she was determined to continue his legacy. After graduating from high school in 1981, King attended Spelman College, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology in 1985. She then attended Emory University School of Law, earning her Juris Doctor degree in 1988.
After completing her education, King began her career in public service. She served as a law clerk for Chief Judge Dorothy T. Beasley of the Georgia Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of Georgia. She then worked in private practice, representing clients in civil lawsuits. In 1993, King became the first female minister of the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, her father’s former congregation.
In 1995, King was appointed CEO of The King Center, a memorial and educational facility dedicated to the legacy of her father. As CEO, she has worked to continue her father’s vision of non-violent social change and to promote the values of peace, justice, and human dignity. Under her leadership, The King Center has developed a range of programs and initiatives to advance social justice and to combat poverty, racism, and violence.
King is a powerful voice for social justice and has received numerous accolades for her work. In 2015, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States. She has been inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame, and was named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World by Time Magazine in 2018.
King is the author of several books, including her memoir Hard Questions, Heart Answers, which chronicles her life and the legacy of her father. She also wrote My Journey with Dad: A Memoir of Growing Up King, a book about her childhood and her relationship with her father. In addition, she has written several books about nonviolence and social justice, including The Power of Nonviolence: The Ethical and Social Imperatives for Change and The Beloved Community: How Faith Shapes Social Justice.
