Darren Walker is the President of the Ford Foundation, one of the largest and most influential philanthropic organizations in the world. He is also a noted author, speaker, and thinker on issues of social justice and inequality.

Born in 1962 in Lafayette, Louisiana, Darren was the youngest of three children. His father was a truck driver and his mother was a homemaker. Growing up in a working-class family in the segregated South, Darren experienced firsthand the racism and poverty that afflicted so many African Americans. Despite the challenges he faced, Darren excelled in school and was awarded a full scholarship to the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics.

After graduation, Darren worked in the banking industry for a few years before enrolling in Harvard Law School. Upon earning his law degree, he began his career as a civil rights attorney, working first for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund and then for the New York firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison.

In 2001, Darren joined the Rockefeller Foundation as a vice president. He later served as the foundation’s president, overseeing its grant-making and impact investing activities around the world.

In 2013, Darren became the tenth president of the Ford Foundation, one of the largest private foundations in the United States. Under his leadership, the foundation has become a powerful force for social change, supporting initiatives to reduce inequality and promote justice in the United States and around the world.

Darren is a highly respected voice on issues of social justice and inequality. He is the author of the book From Generosity to Justice: A New Gospel of Wealth (2010), and his writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Chronicle of Philanthropy, among other publications.
