Andre Agassi is a world-class tennis player, business mogul, and motivational speaker who travels the world and speaks at colleges, business conferences, and sports teams.

Emmanuel “Mike” Agassi (a former Olympic boxer from Iran) and Elizabeth “Betty” Agassi (a breast cancer survivor) welcomed their son Andre Agassi into the world on April 29, 1970, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Philip, his elder brother, and Tami, his younger sister, complete his immediate family. Father stated that he had Armenian and Assyrian roots from his paternal grandpa and German heritage from his maternal grandfather Agassi is a first cousin of U.S. Representative John Lewis via his father (D-GA). When Agassi was born, his father was a professional tennis player and his mother was a former professional tennis player. He has Armenian ancestry to a large extent.

His mother, Elizabeth “Betty” Agassi, was born in the United States, while his father, Emmanuel “Mike” Agassi, was born in Iran. Her maternal grandpa came from Ireland and Germany, according to Agassi’s father; his maternal grandfather was of Armenian and Assyrian origin. Agassi is a first cousin of U.S. Representative John Lewis via his father (D-GA). A breast cancer survivor, Agassi’s mother was a strong role model for him. When Agassi was barely two years old, he started playing tennis. He appeared in a television ad for a Las Vegas tennis club when he was only four years old. Former Pete Sampras and Tracy Austin coach Robert Lansdorp was eventually hired to work with him.

In 1986, Agassi made his Grand Slam debut at the French Open, when he lost to Henri Leconte in the first round. In 1987, in Itaparica, he won his first ATP championship. In 1988, Agassi made it to the quarterfinals of Wimbledon, losing to eventual winner Stefan Edberg in a five-set thriller.

In 1989, when he defeated incumbent French Open champion Mats Wilander in the final, Agassi had his breakout year. In addition, he made it all the way to the Australian Open quarterfinals before falling to eventual winner Ivan Lendl in straight sets. Agassi beat Boris Becker in the Wimbledon finals in 1990 to win the tournament. In the final, he beat Petr Korda of the Czech Republic to claim the US Open title.

In April 1991, Agassi became the first man to hold the top spot in the ATP rankings for the first time, a record he maintained for 101 weeks. Six Grand Slam singles championships were won by him throughout his professional career. At the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, he won the Olympic gold medal in singles tennis as well.

In 2006, Agassi announced his retirement from tennis. In 2011, he was given honorary membership in the International Tennis Hall of Fame for his contributions to the sport.
