Kaku was born in 1947 in San Jose, California. He developed an interest in science at an early age, and went on to receive a Bachelor’s degree from Harvard and a Doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley. During his time at Berkeley, he was mentored by Edward Witten, Nobel Laureate and founder of the modern string theory.
In 1974, Kaku began teaching at the City College of New York, where he has remained ever since. The Einstein Institute in Berlin, Germany, and Princeton University’s Institute for Advanced Study have both hosted him as a visiting scientist or lecturer.
