The Walt Disney Company’s chairman and CEO, Bob Iger, is from the United States of America. On February 10, 1951, Iger was born in New York City. In 1973, he earned his bachelor’s degree in communications from Ithaca College’s Roy H. Park School of Communications. At ABC station WENY-TV in Ithaca, New York, Iger started his career as a weatherman, and went on to become the CEO of the company. Later, he was promoted to the position of news producer at the channel.
In 1974, Iger became a features editor at ABC News. ABC promoted him to the position of President and Chief Executive Officer of ABC Entertainment in 1989. In the early 1990s, Iger was key in ABC’s “TGIF” programming block’s popularity. Popular series like “Home Improvement” and “NYPD Blue” were also under his stewardship.
ABC’s entertainment section was led by Iger since 1995. In 1996, he rose through the ranks of ABC’s parent company, Capital Cities/ABC, Inc., to become president and chief operating officer. The Walt Disney Company bought Capital Cities/ABC in 1996. Disney purchased ABC Group in 1999, and Iger was named president of the combined company.
In the year 2000, Bob Iger was promoted to the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of The Walt Disney Company. In 2005, he was elevated to the position of president and CEO. Disney has bought Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm during Iger’s leadership. The Chinese state-owned media firm CCTV has likewise formed a fruitful cooperation with Disney.
Disney’s success under Iger’s leadership has been generally lauded. In 2006, he was selected “CEO of the Year” by the publication Chief Executive. In 2007 and 2008, Time magazine named Iger one of the “100 Most Influential People in the World,” respectively. Broadcasting’s highest honor, the Broadcasting Hall of Fame, has been bestowed to Iger.
Since 1995, Iger has served as the head of ABC’s entertainment division. In 1996, he was promoted to the position of president and chief operating officer of ABC’s parent company, Capital Cities/ABC, Inc. Capital Cities/ABC was purchased by the Walt Disney Company in 1996. It was 1999 when Disney acquired ABC Group, and Iger was chosen CEO of the merged firm.
In 2000, Bob Iger was elevated to the role of CEO of The Walt Disney Company (Disney). He was appointed president and chief executive officer in 2005. Iger has overseen Disney’s acquisition of Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm. A successful partnership between Disney and China’s state-owned media company CCTV has also been established.
Under Iger’s leadership, Disney has seen tremendous growth. In 2006, he was selected CEO of the Year by Chief Executive magazine. “Time’s 100 Most Influential People” has named him twice, most recently for 2007 and 2008. It’s the industry’s highest honor for Iger to have been elected into the Broadcast Hall of Fame.
